The first set of British India notes were the 'Victoria Portrait' Series issued in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000. These were unifaced, carried two language panels and were printed on hand-moulded paper manufactured at the Laverstock Paper Mills (Portals). The security features incorporated the watermark (GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, RUPEES, two signatures and wavy lines), the printed signature and the registration of the notes

Family Sports Day:

As a celebration of Indian Independence Day, a family sports day was organized by IASP at Magic City Resort.

More than 100 people had a gala day with sports for children, ladies and the gents.

The event started with the children singing the Indian National Anthem and march past.

The day on the whole turned out to be enjoyable for everyone, specially for the winners who recieved medals.

Prizes were also given to the winners of the painting competetion.

Raksha Bandhan in Brasil

For the first time ever Raksha Bandhan was celebrated in public outside India in Sao Paulo (Brasil) on 16th August 2008. The event was organized by Alok and Anupma Sharman under the umbrella of the Brasil India Chamber of Commerce (Sao Paulo) and was sponsored by Consulate of India (Sao Paulo). Around 250 Brasilians attended the function and tied rakhis. A ceremony was performed on stage to explain to them what this festival is all about.

Raksha Bandhan

Rakhi holds immense significance in Indian cultural ethos. The custom of celebrating Rakhi started in Vedic times and even today brothers and sisters consider it must to celebrate the occasion in traditional manner. When brothers are away sisters send Rakhi to them and express their love. Accepting the Rakhi with grace brothers send Return gifts to their sister. This loving gesture goes a long way in strengthening brother sister relationship and building stronger family ties. The importance of Raksha Bandhan is same as Diwali festival in India.

Removal of untouchablity and illiteracy are among the aims of Free India. Indians can rightly feel proud of its past achievements, as its celebrates the 61st Independence Day on August 15th, 2008 and it is hoped will continue its onward journey spreading the message of LOVE, FRIENDSHIP & PEACE.

Painting Competition

The Cultural Committee of IASP organized a painting competition for children on 22nd July 2008. There were 18 children of different age groups.( 2 and 1/2 - 11 years.)

Anxious mothers waiting for their children .

Medals were given to all the children for participation. The winners will be announced during the forth-coming Independence Day Event which will be held on 17th August 2008.

Alok Sharman taught them some drill exercises. (for Independence Day Event )

The children were really excited and enthusiastic to learn.

They were also given a printout of the National Anthem Of India.

IASP organised a picnic on 25th May -2008 at Hotel Del Verde, Itapecerica de Serra.There were about 70 adults and 20 children.Two buses were arranged so that everybody could be together and sing and enjoy during the journey.It was a day full of fun, frolic, games, antakshari etc. etc.The Cultural Committee also had organised games for adults and children.Homi and Monaz also celebrated the birthday of their daughter Zeena. After lunch and tea everybody got into the mood of playing cricket.On the whole it was an enjoyable day for everyone.

National Emblem of India
The National emblem is a symbol of contemporary India's reaffirmation of its commitment to world peace and goodwill.
The National Emblem of India is a replica of the Lion of Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh State. The Lion Capital was erected in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Ashoka to mark the spot where Lord Buddha first proclaimed his gospel of peace and emancipation..
It is symbolic of India's reaffirmation of its ancient commitment to world peace and goodwill. In the original, there are four lions, standing back to back, mounted on a abacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull and a lion separated by intervening wheels over a bell-shaped lotus. Carved out of a single block of polished sandstone, the capital is crowned by the Wheel of the Law (Dharma Chakra).
In the state emblem adopted by the Government of India on 26 January 1950, only three lions are visible, the fourth being hidden from view. The wheel appears in relief in the center of the abacus with a bull on the right and a horse on the left and the outlines of the other wheels on extreme right and left. The bell-shaped lotus has been omitted.
The four lions (one hidden from view) - symbolising power, courage and confidence - rest on a circular abacus. The abacus is girded by four smaller animals - guardians of the four directions: the lion of the north, the elephant of the east, the horse of the south and the bull of the west.The abacus rests on a lotus in full bloom, exemplifying the fountainhead of life and creative inspiration. The motto 'Satyameva Jayate' inscribed below the emblem in Devanagari script means 'truth alone triumphs'

THE NATIONAL FLAG OF INDIA is in tricolour of deep saffron(Kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion.The flag is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion of deep saffron on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two is to three. In the centre of the white band, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. Its diameter approximates the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes. The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white, for purity and truth; the green for faith and fertility. The design of the National Flag was adopted by India's constituent assembly on 22nd july, 1947. It's use and display are regulated by a code. The Indian flag symbolizes freedom. The late Prime Minister Pandit Nehru called it a flag not only of freedom for ourselves, but a symbol of freedom for all people.

The Indian National anthem, composed originally in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the National Anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. The lyrics were rendered into English by Tagore himself.

Translation of The national anthem- Jana Gana Mana In English

Thou are the ruler of the minds of all people, dispenser of India's destiny.
The name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujurat and Maratha. Of the Dravid and Orissa and Bengal.
It Echoes in the hills of Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for your blessing and sing thy praise. The salvation of all peaople is thy hand, thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, Victory, Victory to thee.
The Jana Gana Mana was composed by Shri Rabindranath Tagore and first sung at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress on December 27th, 1911. It was adopted as the National Anthem of India on 24th January, 1950 by the Constituent Assembly. The first stanza( out of five stanzas) of the song forms the National Anthem.

Farewell

Our colleague and member of the fiscal committee Abraham Mathai, his wife Elizabeth, and their children Ana and Ruben will be leaving us in May 2007, in order to fix their residence in Mumbai where Abraham will be assuming his new assignment. We wish sucess to Abraham in his new position and his family a pleasant life in Mumbai.

Happenings March 2007

IASP (Indian Association of São paulo) inaugurated itsactivities for 2007 with an outing to Recanto Ville d’Geneve in Jarinú on March 25, 2007. The outing was atteneded by over sixty people including members and non members of the Association. It was very gratifying to note that several new members joined the Association on this day. The occasion was graced by the presence of Mr. S. Swaminathan, Consul General of India and Mrs. Mallika Swaminathan along with their daughter who was visiting Brazil on holidays. The Indian Ambassador in Brazil Mr. H.S. Puri, who was also expected to attend the outing, conveyed his regrets at his inability to attend and transmitted his best wishes for the success of the outing in a short e-mail message. Both Ambassador Puri and CG Swamiathan have offered their full support to the Association.

The outing started with a get aquainted seession followed by a buffet lunch that was quite wholesome and enjoyable. After lunch a good part of the crowd took to the football field while the remining watched the game. It was a nice sunny day that made the outing most enjoyable.

At the General Body Meeting held at the end of the day the financial statement for 2006 was approved andthe calendar of events for 2007 were discussed. It was aired that that a propsal of strategy for the Association for a period of five years should be arrived at through informal discussions among the members of the Association as well as of the community that will be presented to the General Body for appeciation and approval.

Major events scheduled for the year are (i) Dinner evening to commemorate the Independance day on Saturday, August 18 2007 and (ii) Grand Scale Dinner and Show event on Saturday Novemebr 10, 2007 to celebrate Diwali. Please block these days in your agenda. You will receive the detailed program in due course.

We are planning informal get together over pizza or snack and drinks at periodic intervals to discuss over the strategy for the Association over the coming five years. A small coordinating committee will collect opinions and formulate a proposal for appreciation of the General Body. Please participate and express your views. First of these gatherings is scheduled for the evening of Saturday May 12 in Moema. The venue will be informed shortly. Please reserve the day and participate.
